FDA approves telescopic eye implant

The FDA has approved a new eye implant that is targeted at people over 75.  In can magnify images by 2.2 or 2.7 times.  It can only be used in one eye, the other must be used for peripheral vision.  In testing 75% of the 219 patients experienced improved vision.  The device is made by Opthalmic Technologies Inc.  The device is rather large for an eye implant, which make it have significant risk, like the need for a corneal transplant.  There is still another round of studies to go on another 770 patients before it can be commercially applied.  The eye telescope also costs a hefty $15,000.
