At this years Black Hat conference which is basically a hacker gathering and demonstration. A hacker named Barnaby Jack showed how he managed to hack various ATMs and make them dispense all of there cash. He accomplished this by using a physical key to open a compartment that housed a standard usb port. Then he simply ran a program he made which makes the ATM give out all of its goodies. He was supposed to demo this at last years conference, but there were concerns that the manufacturers would not be able to plug the holes in time. He stated that his goal "isn't to teach everybody how to hack ATMs. It's to raise the issue and have ATM manufacturers be proactive about implementing fixes". The hack also allows him to gain access to the card data of anyone who has used the machine. Very interesting stuff. For more info follow the links.
