NASA and Goodyear team up to make Airless tires, win award

I have always thought that the current air filled tire design was outdated.  Apparently so did NASA, which is why they in partnership with Goodyear have developed an airless tire for space vehicles.  The tire is composed of 800 interwoven load bearing springs.  The obvious benefits are that they have eliminated flat tires for one.  The tire also acts as one big shock of sorts, limiting the amount of force going back to the vehicle and making the ride smoother.  It has also just won the 2010 R&D award.  Now the question is, when are we going to see some airless tires on real cars.  Companies have been making airless prototypes for years with zero products brought to market.  Follow the link for more info.
